Horrible Judge of Character: If you put out a call for the most untrustworthy and selfish men in England, Drawlight and Lascelles would be at the head of the queue, but Norrell makes them close confidants. Later, he chooses Lascelles over Childermass, even though Childermass had previously been shot in saving Norrell from Lady Pole.; Insufferable Genius: He believes himself to be the greatest. The book mentions Norrell shushing other gentlemen who think they can talk over a servant, because he actually wants Childermass's opinions on some things. Also, I think he just really likes magic. level 2.

I believe Childermass is the Raven King, who has somehow become enslaved to Mr. Norell and is being used by him in order to further his own magical abilities.

This would explain quite a lot about what I have seen in the series - though I did miss. In the New Testament, the Massacre of the Innocents is the incident in the nativity narrative of the Gospel of Matthew () in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution of all male children two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem.A majority of Herod biographers, and "probably a majority of biblical scholars", hold the event to be myth, legend or folklore.

Appearance: The Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull. But to return to Childermass, this book was designed by Lewis to be his Ulysses by Joyce; a work of uncontrollable ferocity and illisibility (that’s elitist unreadability). Believe it or not—Lewis believes in attacking the audience a key component in all early forms of modernist art.

Biographical details about John Childermass which occur at various points in the book reveal he was by birth a Yorkshireman [48], the son of a woman known as Black Joan, and probably born in the East Riding [63].

As he is said to have formed part of a pack of child-thieves which his mother ran there during "the late s" [63] we should estimate his year of birth as circa Childermass and in what meaningful sense it could be referred to as a ‘novel’.

The question of generic definition is important because Lewis wants to communicate ideas in the book not expressible in his earlier works on the general theme.

Wyndham Lewis’s The Childermass (), the first volume of the unfinished epic The Human Age (parts two and three came out in the fifties), is unarguably the most radical, outlandish, and formally experimental work in Lewis’s oeuvre.
